One team has been to the playoffs six times in seven years. The other captured 88 wins this season. Now, the Houston Astros and the Atlanta Braves are meeting at the World Series. International data from YouGov Sport shows how popular these two teams are around the world.
Of the 20 markets in which YouGov has data on baseball fans, those in Morocco tops the list, with 18% of them declaring support for the Braves and 17% for the Astros. It’s worth noting that baseball is not particularly popular in Moracco, and fans of the sport represent only a marginal portion of the market’s population.
Beyond Morocco, the Braves garner support from baseball fans in Lebanon (13%), Colombia (13%), Slovakia (12%) and Romania (11%). The Astros have the support of many fans in Romania (15%), Slovakia (13%), Portugal (13%), and India (13%). India has been one of several markets in which the MLB has made efforts through MLB International, announcing in 2019 a new office in New Delhi to promote the growth of the sport in the region.
Mexico is also a key market for the league. While COVID forced the cancelation of a regular-season series in Mexico City, the MLB has stated it plans to reschedule a series. Among Mexican fans, 5% support the Braves and 12% favor the Astros.
Meanwhile in the United States, we see how each team’s Buzz score – which measures positive chatter around the team – has increased throughout their respective playoff runs.
The Braves saw a substantial boost in their Buzz score leading up to clinching their playoff spot on Sept. 30, posting a 124% increase in the month of September, with modest gains thereafter.
At the same time, the Astros saw an 86% hike in their Buzz score but continued an upward trend throughout their playoff run. While Houston scores lower than the Braves, the team experienced greater gains between the start of September and the last week of October.

Methodology: The data is based on the interviews of adults aged 18 and over in 20 markets with sample sizes varying between 110 and 4,314 for each market. All interviews were conducted online in August and September 2021. Data from each market uses a nationally representative sample apart from Mexico and India, which use urban representative samples. The Buzz score for Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves is based on the question: “Over the past two weeks, which of the following teams have you heard something positive about? / Now which of the following brands have you heard something negative about?” and delivered as a net score between –100 and +100. Scores are based on an average daily sample size of 267 US baseball fans between September 1 and October 24, 2021. Figures are based on a four-week moving average. Learn more about BrandIndex.
