The Alabama Crimson Tide topped this year’s CFP ranking, a seventh appearance in the eight-year-old event for the top-seeded Alabama team. YouGov data shows that 6% of Americans who watch at least some college football action each year show their support for Alabama, making it the third most popular Division 1 team.
Alabama will go up against the Cincinnati Bearcats, who are Top Four newbies. The Bearcats command a much lower proportion of fans, with just 2% of college football watchers indicating support. Alabama and Cincinnati will face each other in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 31.
Shortly thereafter, the Georgia Bulldogs – making their second CFP appearance – will take on the Michigan Wolverines, who are the second most popular team on our list with 8% of the market on their side. Georgia commands support from 4% of college football viewers.
The Ohio State Buckeyes is the most popular team among viewers at 9%, but just missed out on making it to the playoffs. They will however play in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 against Utah Utes, who have 2% support.
Notre Dame is another team viewer favorite that didn’t make the playoff cut this year. The Fighting Irish, with 5% viewer support, will face the Oklahoma State Cowboys (3%).
