Who are the most talked-about teams in US sport right now?

As the major leagues crank back into action, we took a quick look at which teams are the most talked-about right now. Take a look for yourself in our tables below.

For each league, we look the highest-ranked teams for our Word of Mouth metric score over the last month (“In the last two weeks, which of these leagues/sports events have you spoken about to friends or family?”).

As you can see, it’s the Yankees who are top of the league among our baseball teams, achieving a score which is head and shoulders above its baseball competitors (and also amongst teams from most other sports too).

And while the Mets are second-placed to the Yankees, both teams are up there for very different reasons – the Yankees for leading AL East and the Mets for propping up the NL East. But there are some big climbers here too – with both the Phillies and the Marlins making playing much bigger parts in the conversation among baseball fans.

It’s the Lakers who top out our most-talked-about NBA properties, although the Bulls have closed the gap compared to the last monthly ranking – even though they haven’t been involved in the league’s restart. Three of the teams in the top five are now involved in the play-offs, so expect them to keep scoring highly, while the Bulls and Warriors continue to be part of the conversation thanks to superstars and off-court incident.

It’s the NHL’s newest team that people can’t stop talking about – the Seattle Kraken.

The Kraken score 2 points higher than their nearest rivals-  the Blackhawks –  who are, alongside two of our top five involved in the NHL’s play-offs.  All are up on their previous month’s score, as you’d expect given the end-of-season interest. The Rangers may not be involved in the play-offs but picking up top pick Alexis Lafrenière in the draft has propelled them into the top five.

Meanwhile, the Kraken’s owners will be delighted to see so much chat about a team that has yet to play a game.

The NFL might be the only league which has yet to begin but there’s never a time when it’s not generating plenty of chatter. In fact, the top five teams for Word of Mouth in the NFL all come in the top ten ranking of major league teams among the general population (so including all other teams from the other three major leagues and removing our fan filter).

The NFL team which tops the ranking here (and overall) does so for non-sports reasons and it’s Washington’s football franchise. Formerly known as the Redskins, the team has now confirmed it will be ditching that name and brand – and that’s really got people talking about it.

The Cowboys and Patriots are regular features at the top of the rankings but if the Chiefs can sustain the form that saw them win the Championship, we’d expect them to join that company. A new ten-year contract for Patrick Mahomes won’t hurt their chances.
